Dondang Sayang Mari BerjogetTime: 8.00pm to 10.00pm
Venue: Istana Hall
Joget songs will reverberate at the Malay Heritage Centre when our musicians play a repertoire of Joget music from the past to the present.
Accompanying the Sri Saujana musicians will be our friends from Gunung Sayang Association featuring G.T Lye and also local jazz and R&B singer Rudy Djoharnaen.
In Singapore’s Peranakan theatre, the matriarch is often a colorful character and a protagonist of the play. G.T. Lye is your favourite Bibik, who made the Peranakan matriarch such a well respected (and feared) character in Peranakan theatre. He is the Peranakan Theatre’s most well known matriach.
Amongst the plays that G.T. Lye has been involved in are Menyesal and A Mother’s Pet.
Gunung Sayang Association is a performing arts group made up of Peranakan elders. And G.T Lye, famous for playing the role of Bibik, a peranakan matriarch, will also be joining in this singing and dancing session.
SRI SAUJANA
Established in 1998, this team is made up of 6 musicians and 2 singers. They have won several music competitions including Runner Up of Pertandingan Ghazal in 1999, Winner of Pertandingan Ghazal in 2001 and 2002. They also regularly perform for weddings and official events such as the SEA Games at Bukit Jalil and Bulan Kemerdekaan at PWTC amongst many others.
GUNONG SAYANG ASSOCIATION
Gunong Sayang Association was founded in 1910 by Babas in Singapore who were interested in the singing of Dondang Sayang (Malay Pantun). On the days that they were free, especially on Sundays, they would meet and sing their pantuns. Those who could play musical instruments, would accompany them on their violins, guitars and accordions.
At the beginning, membership was opened to males only. In the late 80s, spouses of members were encouraged to join the Association and later, ladies were included. Now we have the Nonya Sayang and the Adek Sayang groups - ladies and youngsters group.
