Malay Heritage Centre cordially invites you to the Exhibition opening of:

Khat : Ramadan 08
A Calligraphy Exhibtion at Malay Heritage Centre
7 September 2008, 5:00 pm, Malay Heritage Museum
Featuring works by S. Mohdir, Hj Sulaiman Hj Suhaimi and Mohammad Din Mohammad
Khat or Islamic Calligraphy in Arabic script or Jawi writing blends together the rich Islamic art and Malay tradition. It depicts the verses from the Quran or hadith (the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad).
The Malays believe that Islamic Calligraphy is divine and talismanic. Besides paintings, these inscriptions are also applied in the Malay tradition of woven textiles, swords and spears as well as intricate carvings with floral motives and decorations.
This exhibition on Khat presents a unique combination of visual presentation by the artists using bold and radiant colors to illustrate the meaning of the verses through their own interpretation of life and religious experience.
