Episode Satu (25 Feb, Saturday): Place Histories and Malay Heritage in Singapore

This talk highlights the importance of the port town located in and around Kampong Gelam Conservation District not only to Malay cultural heritage but also to the very history of Singapore as a port city. The notion of cultural heritage will be examined with an emphasis on rootedness-to-place. At the same time, regional and international connections so central to Singapore's appeal as an intersection in this region will be mapped out.

Today, more than half of this former town has been demolished, with little trace of its former importance in Singapore urban and architectural history. Equally forgotten is Kampung Gelam's prominence in the development of 19th century Singapore's commerce, printing and publishing, and various aspects of culture connected with a trade and shipping hub.

The only recourse left is to recover this story through archival materials ranging from building plans, maps, images, oral histories to written accounts. Together, these sources present an astonishing picture of a town which bore testimony to the dynamism of the Malay urban community, including Javanese, Bugis and other communities indigenous to the region, who chose to invest in the cityís future in very real terms and whose stories have hardly been broached in the context of the story of Singapore.

Speaker: Dr. Imran Tajudeen
